10 Essential Missing Characters From Mortal Kombat 1 That Should Make a Comeback in the Sequel

Following the release of Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, it appears that updates for the game have come to a close, and both Netherrealm Studios and Warner Bros. are likely shifting their focus to new projects. Over the past 18 months, a total of 12 primary roster fighters and six Kameo characters have been integrated into MK1, creating, in my opinion, one of the franchise’s most diverse rosters. This impressive ensemble included beloved 3D era characters like Ashrah, Reiko, Nitara, and Havik in conjunction with series veterans such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden.

Despite the apparent conclusion of support for MK1, several iconic characters remain absent from the game, including several fan favorites. Mortal Kombat stands as one of the longest-running combat game franchises, boasting over 70 fighters, not counting the renowned guest characters and unplayable bosses. While the addition of the T-1000 from *Terminator 2* marked the end of roster updates, there are numerous characters that should return in the sequel.

10 Kung Jin: The Underrated Archer

The Archer Deserves More Attention

Kung Jin

Since his debut in *Mortal Kombat 10*, Kung Jin has been notably absent, making him the only “Kombat Kid”missing from MK1. Rumors and leaks suggested that he was slated for DLC, but whether he would have been included as a Kameo or a full fighter remains unconfirmed.

In a brief cameo towards the end of MK1’s story mode, Kung Jin sported a fresh design, leading many to speculate a potential DLC inclusion, reminiscent of Takeda’s eventual addition. His unique blend of archery and staff combat skills from MK10 showcased a fascinating move set. As the franchise’s confirmed male LGBTQ+ character, his return alongside other “Kombat Kids”could offer an intriguing narrative direction.

9 Kabal: The Zoning Master

Subtle References Left Fans Wanting More

Kabal, previously one of the most formidable and popular characters in MK9 and MK11, was sorely missed in MK1 despite references to him throughout the game. As a member of the Black Dragon clan, Kabal frequently plays the role of a fallen fighter in the story. His punishing moveset and distinctive design left an impact that continues to resonate with fans.

Notably, both the T-1000 and Ghostface referenced Kabal’s abilities, indicating that his legacy is still alive within the MK universe. Considering this continued homage, it seems unlikely that Kabal has been permanently sidelined.

8 Cassie Cage: A Rising Star

The Prodigy of Iconic Parents

Cassie Cage in Mortal Kombat 11

Cassie Cage quickly became a fan favorite upon her introduction in *Mortal Kombat 10*. Though she returned in a limited capacity in MK11, her comedic charm and unique combat style—incorporating moves from both Johnny and Sonya—set her apart. Reports indicated that she was also considered for a DLC role in MK1, reinforcing her significance in the series.

7 Jax: An MK Icon

Beyond Kameo Status

Jax in Mortal Kombat

Although Jax appeared in MK1, he was only available as a Kameo, leaving fans yearning for his full return as a playable character. As a foundational figure in the MK franchise, Jax’s dynamic personality and strong presence should have a place in the next installment, especially considering the narrative arcs that could be explored now that he’s not tied solely to the Special Forces.

6 Erron Black: The Lone Gunslinger

A Unique Presence

Erron Black has etched himself into the MK lore as one of the franchise’s standout characters, combining the western gunslinger archetype with a mystical flair unique to the series. His signature use of firearms and trickery has captivated players, especially during competitive scenes where he shone brightly.

5 Kano: The Iconic Anti-Hero

A Character at Peak Popularity

Kano in Mortal Kombat

Kano stands out as a character currently experiencing a renaissance in popularity, amplified by memorable performances in both the 2021 reboot film and the original MK movie. Though he was included as an oppressive Kameo in MK1, fans are eager to see him reclaim his status as a fully playable character again.

4 D’Vorah: The Controversial Antagonist

A Memorable Presence

D'Vorah in Mortal Kombat

D’Vorah, a contentious figure, made a significant mark on the franchise by playing a pivotal role in key narratives. Despite some fans’ criticisms regarding her overall character development and perceived invulnerability, her distinct design and abilities left a notable absence in MK1. She has quickly become one of the standout villains in the series.

3 Skarlet: The Blood Sorceress

Limitless Potential in Gameplay

Skarlet in Mortal Kombat 11

Skarlet first appeared as a DLC character in MK9, bringing a unique blood magic combat style that allowed her to conjure weapons from her own life force. With her innovative gameplay, she progressed further into MK11’s main roster, showcasing a more versatile strategy. Given the criticisms faced by her replacement Nitara in MK1, reintroducing Skarlet would present an exciting opportunity for her character development.

2 Sonya Blade: The Series’ Icon

Pioneering Woman in Gaming

Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat

It’s odd for a game labeled *Mortal Kombat 1* to exclude Sonya Blade, the franchise’s original female character. Her absence is particularly notable given her historical importance and consistent appearances throughout the series. While she did appear as a Kameo in MK1, her lack of central narrative involvement felt like a missed opportunity.

Sonya’s rich legacy and connections to the series make her absence more shocking, especially given the cool trivia surrounding her name’s inspiration. It would indeed be a surprise if she were to miss out on the main roster again.

1 Jade: The Fan Favorite

A Character Longed For by Fans

Jade in Mortal Kombat

Jade’s minimal presence in MK1—limited to brief references rather than any playable role—has left fans baffled. Ed Boon’s acknowledgment of her as one of the most requested characters compounds the anticipation for her inclusion. Her absence might be felt similarly to how fans approached the delayed releases of Mileena and Rain in MK11.

While Jade and Tanya have historically shared timelines, their simultaneous inclusion seems unlikely to occur again. Nevertheless, many fans hope to trade Tanya for Jade in future titles as we await the next installment of *Mortal Kombat*, providing the opportunity for one of the most beloved characters to return.
